Alice RussellMusic that tugs at the emotions and raises hairs on the back of the neck. You really can?t fake what Miss. Russell?s got! Alice Russell has gained an enviable reputation as one of the hottest singers in the UK right now. Her tracks with the Quantic and Quantic Soul Orchestra projects helped elevate her profile further. Alice's lavishly soulful voice is both timeless and up to the minute modern. Live or on record, she always performs with her trademark self assurance and sass. Her style is a predominantly bluesy, soul lament but encompasses everything from funk to gospel to jazz and beyond. Her performances captivate the audience and command its attention. Her primary influences are golden voices such as Minnie Ripperton, Eva Cassidy, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin as well as Jill Scott. Alice's sensual, sublime voice has seen her work on many different projects in a number of capacities. Her work with Bah Samba (who released on Estereo Recordings) finds her fusing latin sounds with tinges of house, uplifting jazz and funk, where as her material with band Kushti, reveals a more laidback, hip hop and soul inspired sound. Alice always pens her own songs; they are quick witted and often influenced by other musicians, something that she states has been an important stimulus for her solo work. Her solo outing is a live six piece band Alice Russell Live comprising of a prime selection of talented musicians. http://www.alicerussell.co.ukMark ThomasMark Thomas is a British comedian and political activist. One of the few stand-ups still to carry the political standard of alternative comedy, he is essentially an observational comic – only his observations tend to revolve around the crusading anti-corporate, anti-greed investigations he undertakes. He is best known for his campaigning Channel 4 series, in which he employed, Michael Moore-style, televisual stunts to get his message across. But his work also has a serious side: in one episode he got an Indonesian military chief to admit on camera that their government used torture. In 1992, his Edinburgh show was nominated for the Perrier award – the same year the fizzy water brand was bought by Nestle, one of the corporations Thomas now campaigns against so vociferously. Four years later, he launched his strident TV programme, which ran for seven years. To this day he continues to be involved in the political causes that so influence his comedy. Mark is currently promoting the People's Manifesto and putting forward a parliamentary candidate to run under this banner. http://www.markthomasinfo.comBellarucheBelleruche are perfectly described as handmade hip hop blues soul, like Sarah Vaughan, Django Reinhardt and Cut Chemist stuck in a lift with Russian beer and a sampler. Belleruche’s distinctive sound is a self-styled brand of handmade hip hop blues soul: think Sarah Vaughan, Django Reinhardt and Cut Chemist stuck in a lift with Russian beer and a sampler. Initially, Belleruche released a handful of extremely limited 7” records on their own Hippoflex label, including the ‘Four Songs EP’. These individually numbered 45’s (with hand-printed sleeves) quickly sold out in the UK’s independent record stores and attracted a cult following in the UK and Europe, having been hand-distributed by the band members. In 2007 Belleruche signed to Tru Thoughts and their debut album ‘Turntable Soul Music’ was released in July of that year to fantastic reactions from fans and the media alike, garnering admiring reviews both at home and abroad and becoming the fastest-selling debut album in the label’s history. If Lamb and Portishead are your thing, then Belleruche’s debut will be right up your street; it’s pure soulful Jazz with scratch and textures aplenty. Banco De GaiaBanco De Gaia Inspired to enter the field of electronic music by Britain's acid house explosion of the late '80s, Toby Marks took quite a different spin on electronica with his recordings as Banco de Gaia, introducing elements of Eastern and Arabic music, sampling similarly exotic sources, and tying the whole to ambient-dub rhythms. Marks began releasing cassette-only albums in the early '90s, distributed through a network of clubs and artists known as Planet Dog. When Planet Dog became a record label as well (later the home of Eat Static and Timeshard), Banco de Gaia debuted on disc with the Desert Wind EP, released in November 1993. Early the following year, Marks released his first album, Maya. For 1995's Last Train to Lhasa, Marks concerned himself with the plight of occupied Tibet. The following year brought a rare concert recording, Live at Glastonbury, with Big Men Cry appearing in 1997, followed by The Magical Sounds of Banco de Gaia two years later. In late 2000, Marks returned with Igizeh through Six Degrees Records, a label with which he decided to stay for 2004's You Are Here and 2006's Farewell Ferengistan. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide http://www.banco.co.ukZion TrainMultimedia acid-dub collective Zion Train comprised vocalist Molara, DJ/bassist Neil Perch, trumpeter David Tench, melodica player Colin Cod and trombonist Chris. Formed in North London in 1990, its members initially came together as a dub sound system; their first single, the limited-edition roots 7" "Power One" (issued on their own Zion Records imprint), immediately sold out, while its follow-up "Power Two" was a major favorite at shaka dances throughout 1992. For their next effort, Zion Train teamed with Studio One vet Devon Russell to remake his cult classic "Jah Holds the Key" — the group's most successful record to date; it garnered airplay throughout Europe and led to the release of their debut LP, the mellow dub outing Passage to Indica. Concurrent with a series of remixes including tracks from the Shamen, Chumbawamba, Afro Celt Sound System, Junior Reid and Loop Guru, Zion Train issued with their next single, the acid house-inspired "Follow Like Wolves." The acclaimed Natural Wonders of the World in Dub was next, debuting in the Top 20 of the U.K. indie charts; A series of limited-edition EPs recorded in collaboration with Knights of the Occasional Table, Diatribe, Conscious and Trancemasters followed in 1994, and were later collected on the Siren LP. After signing with the China label in early 1995, Zion Train issued the single "Get Ready," trailed a few months later by the full-length Homegrown Fantasy. After 1996's Grow Together, they returned the following summer with the two-disc hits collection Single Minded and Alive. Love Revolutionaries followed in mid-00. Rory McleodRory Mcleod - ex-circus clown and fire eater. A one man soulband, poet and storyteller, singing his own unique upbeat dance stories. A modern travelling troubadour using tap shoes, acappella, harmonica, guitar, trombone, spoons, finger cymbals, bandorea, djembe and various percussion instruments! Rory has travelled the globe for different reasons at different times, from Asia to the middle East from Gambia to Cuba, Central America, Australia, North America, Canada, Europe and other nooks and crannies of the earth. "You don't listen to McLeod you travel with him" City Hub, Sydney (Australia) "I've travelled to look for work, to mend a broken heart, to be with someone I longed for. I'd travel to visit friends and on the way I'd make new ones, I'd roam because I was curious to see what was around the next corner, sometimes I travelled to follow the warmer weather and migrate... like the birds and the big whales and fishes do". And it gets better... New additions to the line-up include:- Macka B - Reggae Superstar Macka B was one of Britain's most influential dancehall toasters, pushing the music back toward a Rastafarian political consciousness. His rough, gravelly vocals gave him an instantly identifiable sound, and his production -- chiefly handled by Mad Professor -- updated dub reggae techniques for the dancehall age, proving that the two sounds weren't mutually exclusive. Although the vast majority of Macka B's material was devoted to spiritual and social messages, he did lighten the mood with occasional humorous novelty material. He shunned any aspirations for a commercial crossover, however, staying true to the sound and spirit of reggae's roots. His 1986 album Sign of the Times still remains a milestone of British reggae, and he continued to record for Mad Professor's Ariwa label into the new millennium. Macka B was born Christopher MacFarlane in the West Midlands town of Wolverhampton, England, near Birmingham. As a youth, he played violin and sang in the school choir, but reggae remained his first musical love. He studied engineering and served an apprenticeship, but company factory closures resulted in his being laid off. Instead, he worked on honing his toasting skills, influenced by early reggae DJs like U-Roy, I-Roy, Big Youth, and especially Prince Far I. He started a sound system called Exodus with several friends, and also converted to Rastafarianism. In 1982, he made a trip to Jamaica to take in the exploding dancehall scene, and returned to England with a new commitment to his craft. The next year, he won a competition for aspiring DJs, which led to several radio appearances and a gig with a band called Pre-Wax; their single "Maggie's Letter" was a local hit. Macka B also performed regularly for local sound systems, particularly Wassifa; a tape of one Wassifa sound-system battle found its way to the London-based Fashion Records, who gave him the chance to make his first solo record. "Bible Reader" was released in 1985, and did respectably well on the national reggae singles chart. Macka B subsequently signed with Mad Professor's Ariwa label, and issued his debut album, Sign of the Times, in 1986. An immediate hit among British reggae fans, it went on to top the reggae album charts; it was even hailed as a masterpiece in some quarters, both for its imaginative production and for the vocalist's nimble rhymes and hard-hitting social commentary. A series of similar and generally consistent albums followed, starting with 1987's We've Had Enough. 1988's Looks Are Deceiving spawned the single "Unemployment Blues"; also that year, Macka B traveled to Jamaica for his first recording session there, which resulted in the tracks "Love It in Jamaica" and "Slow Down Driver" under producer Black Scorpio. Returning to England for 1989's Buppie Culture, he scored a huge hit with "Dread a Who She Love," a duet with female singer Kofi that topped the British reggae singles chart. He duplicated the feat with "Proud of Mandela," a post-apartheid celebration that appeared on 1990's Natural Suntan. His prolific output continued apace with 1991's Peace Cup and 1992's Jamaica, No Problem?, which earned him Best Male DJ awards in Britain both years, and 1993's live set Roots Ragga, an accurate description of his sound by that point. 1994's Here Comes Trouble gave Macka B one of his biggest hits with the internationally popular "Squeeze Me," which was hugely successful in Hawaii of all places. The 1995 follow-up, Discrimination, was a strong set, and it was succeeded by Hold On to Your Culture and Suspicious. 1999's semicompilation Roots & Culture mixed some of Macka B's greatest hits with previously unreleased material. It was followed by a new studio set, Global Messenger, in 2000. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide --- The CorrespondentsMC Mr Bruce and DJ/Producer Mr Chuckles collaborate to make Hip Hop for the 1930s, Big Band music for the 00s. Splicing swing samples with squelchy synths over dusty drum loops they’ve depicted a modern day journey into time of rogue’s, lust, affordable clowns and foot-tapping toe curling "get your brogues on" dance floor swing beat. The Correspondents started out in November 2007, when old friends, Mr Bruce and Mr Chuckles, returned to London after a firm schooling at their respective Universities. In Leeds Mr Chuckles had been tinkering with the sounds of Hip Hop, Jazz and Dance music for several years, meanwhile further North in Edinburgh Mr Bruce exerted his vocal dexterity over Drum 'n' Bass, Breaks & Funk. The unlikely pair cut their teeth at a few parties and decided to cement the live performance relationship in their makeshift recording studio. Since then tracks have been recorded, stages have been stomped and knees have hit nipples. The Correspondents have shared stages with the likes (or unlikes) of Florence & The Machine, Lilly Allen, Mika, Little Boots, VV Brown, Bat For Lashes, Lazy Habits, Daedalus, Bassment Jaxx, Rob Da Bank, Rusko, Kitty Daisy & Lewis, Cuban Brothers, Brass Roots, Jocelyn Brown, Dub Pistols etc... etc... You might have seen them at Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Bestival, Shambala Festival, Lovebox Weekender, The Big Chill Festival, Camden Crawl, Innocent Village Fete, Scala Amersham Arms, Bungalow 8, Soho Revue Bar, Vibe Bar, Concord 2, Bloomsbury Bowls, Art Car Boot Fair, Last Days Of Decadance, Madame Jojo's, Notting Hill Arts Club, Bethnal Green Working Men's Club, 33 Portland Place, Shepard's Bush Pavillion, 5 Cavendish Sq, Corsica Studios, Proud Camden, Village Underground, The Cobden Club, The Battersea Arts Centre, The Colony Rooms, and Selfridge's. Gabby Young & The Other Animals"Howling mad and completely irresistible" BBC 6Music “Gabby is a special talent with an enchanting voice.” - BBC Radio 2 And that’s before you get to the music. Almost uncategorisable, Gabby’s unique perspective on the world around her is inspired as much by her singularly surreal imagination as it is real events – most recently, her courageous survival of throat cancer. Gabby Young and Other Animals offer a slew of stunningly beautiful, often haunting songs that are a genre bending explosion of gypsy folk, pop, rock, jazz, cabaret – and a whole lot of soul. Clearly not a case of style over substance, but, like many a performer before her, Gabby loves to play dress up – and since her double page spread in edgy style bible Artrocker magazine, titled “How to dress like Gabby Young” will attest, there are plenty of women out there who find her charismatic looks as inspiring as her music. Gabby Young and her 8 piece band Other Animals have been playing together for several years, garnering a strong, loyal and extremely diverse fanbase enjoying the music, ranging from the burlesque to indie rock, folk and jazz. They have, on invitation, played major festivals such as Glastonbury, The Secret Garden Party, The Big Chill, Latitude, Secret Garden Party, Green Belt and The Marlborough Jazz Festival and a recent sell out show at the famous Union Chapel. They were invited to play at last year’s SXSW festival but declined in favour of a sell-out US tour supporting the great troubadour Al Stewart. 'Young's voice is flawless and captivating. We're All In This Together is a brilliant track and frankly we can't stop playing it.' - Entertainment Focus Other Confirmed Artists include...Sub-Motion Orchestra Kangaroo Moon Gente Green Angels and many others appearing on website soon...
